Canadian Healthcare System: My Experience as a Child

As a child being born in a family where my grandmother was a doctor, one would never have to think about seeking medical advice, get treatment or receive proper medication. Why? It was available to you at any given moment. You did not have to wait for hours on end….

In Canada, thankfully myself and my parents never needed to seek medical attention. My grandparents came to Canada in 1995. At the age they were at, especially my grandfather, we faced challenges at hospitals he was at. Waiting times, speaking to doctors and receiving proper explanation of diagnosis. My grandmother was appalled by what she saw. Thankfully with her experience and us being persistent, we got somewhere and my grandfather managed to keep his health under control.

At age 14, I did not have a clue what Canadian Healthcare system was like. Unfortunately, I came across it and I was disappointed. I broke my collar bone at that age and we went to our family doctor who sent us to the Hospital. I was there with my mom the whole day, going through tests and blood work. We came in the morning and left in the evening. Did I see the doctor? No, but when I came in several other itmes for a follow up, again we waited almost the whole day. The doctor came in, took about 5 minutes and said, you are good to go home. Not only was I exhausted, but it all could have taken much less time.

I work as a Project Coordinator at Canada Health Net. Canada Health Net is a group of passionate lean experts and healthcare innovators dedicated to improving healthcare in Ontario.
